jex
my new alien child
a few days ago i felt a desire to create a character, someone i can draw again and again and create adventures around and attribute characteristics to. i tried to do this several times before but i always end up abandoning my characters.
this time i made jex:
jex is easy enough to draw that i don’t feel resistance to it. their limbs and facial features are extremely basic while still retaining a whimsical vibe. so far i like jex, and i like drawing jex.
jex is probably a gender neutral alien. i can’t give you a lot about jex right now but i guess their story will build up over time and i’ll keep you posted.
i asked chat gpt to tell me about jex’s purpose on earth. they sound like a weird obscure servitor-like creature with ambiguous intentions. i like it. maybe we’ll keep it that way or we’ll change it.
i don’t know what will happen with jex. will i abandon them too? will i get tired and move on to something else?
maybe. but i’m having fun for now. i’m curious to explore giving soul and personality to a character. imagining their experiences, speaking and moving for someone else that only exists in my mind. there are some things i can only imagine expressing through silly weird fictional characters because expressing them in any other way would be either absolutely ridiculous or extremely presumptuous or both.
so here we are - making jexes.
maybe one day jex will have a friend. or two. and an instagram page or a comic book or something.
but for now i’m curious to find out how their body moves, what kinds of places they visit, what kind of adventures they go on, what kind of stories they tell. i want to have long talks with jex and learn from them. i want to break them apart and put them back together, i want to see them happy and sad and furious and high as balls. i want to see them shapeshift into the jester, the sage, the villain and the hero. i want to try being jex, being jex’s friend, being jex’s lover and jex’s hater.
i want to find out what comes out of me when i give life to jex. i want a character that has continuity, that develops over time, but that can also be a super low-pressure project. i will keep hanging out with jex for as long as it feels good, and when it doesn’t anymore i will stop.
thank you for reading :)
i’m also on twitter and on patreon and here is my website
